How We Calculate This

Wind Adjustment Model

Based on research by Davies (1980) and Pugh (1971) on the energy cost of running against wind:

  • Headwind: ~0.7 seconds per km per 1 km/h of wind speed
  • Tailwind: ~0.4 seconds per km per 1 km/h (asymmetric benefit)
  • Crosswind: ~0.3 seconds per km per 1 km/h (~40% of headwind effect)

For race time estimates, the headwind/tailwind split allows modelling of out-and-back or loop courses where you face wind from different directions.
