Elevation-Adjusted Pace Calculator

Calculate your flat-equivalent pace from hilly run data using total ascent and descent.

Total run distance in km

Minutes component of run time

Seconds component of run time

Total elevation gained in metres

Total elevation lost in metres

How We Calculate This

This calculator converts your actual hilly run time into a flat-equivalent performance using standard elevation cost factors.

The formula

Equivalent flat distance = Actual distance + Ascent penalty + Descent penalty

Ascent penalty = Total ascent (m) x 0.065 km per 1000m distance

Descent penalty = Total descent (m) x 0.020 km per 1000m distance

Flat-equivalent pace

Flat pace = Actual time / Equivalent flat distance

The elevation penalty shows how much extra time the hills added to your run compared to flat running at the same effort.
