What is a lane stagger?

A lane stagger is the offset starting position for runners in outer lanes. Because outer lanes have a larger circumference around bends, runners start progressively further forward to ensure everyone runs the same distance.

What is the stagger between lane 1 and lane 8?

On a standard 400m track with 1.22m wide lanes, the stagger between lane 1 and lane 8 is approximately 53.03 metres. Each lane adds about 7.04m of extra distance around the bends.

Where do runners position themselves in their lane?

Lane 1 runners position themselves approximately 30cm from the inner kerb. Runners in lanes 2-8 position approximately 20cm from the inner lane line. These positions are used to calculate the actual running distance.

Do all race distances use staggers?

Staggers are used for all races up to and including 800m where runners start in lanes. For the 800m, runners typically break to the inside after the first bend. Races of 1500m and above start on a curved line with no stagger.

Lane Stagger Calculation

Stagger distance is calculated from the difference in circumference between lanes:

Lane 1 Radius = Inner Radius + 0.30m

Lane n Radius = Inner Radius + (n-1) x Lane Width + 0.20m

Stagger = Number of Bends x pi x (Lane n Radius - Lane 1 Radius)

A standard 400m outdoor track has 2 bends (semicircles), an inner radius of 36.5m and lane widths of 1.22m (IAAF standard).
