How We Calculate This
Equivalence Model
Based on Jones & Doust (1996) research:
- 1% incline compensates for lack of air resistance on a treadmill
- Each additional 1% incline adds metabolic cost equivalent to ~12 seconds/km faster outdoor pace
- Recommended incline = 1 + (Treadmill pace - Outdoor pace) / 12
This model assumes standard indoor conditions. Adjust the air resistance factor in advanced options for different speeds.
